The lion is ready to roar

The third leg of the Big 5 Series will kick-off in KwaMbonambi next week

THE BuildIt Kwambo Lion MTB has proven to be a fast track, but it offers all the excitement expected of off-road racing.

The race, the third leg of the Bell Big 5 MTB Challenge, takes place on Sunday, 10 July with the 50km riders starting at 8.30am, the 25km at 9am and the 10km riders at 9.30am.

The 25km climbs up along a gravel road out of the Kwambo Club before the first of many single track sections through eucalyptus plantations.

A landmark on the track is a culvert crossing which is easily ridden by the top riders, but does cause indecision among the less experienced riders who opt to walk.

There is a short traverse into the adjoining rural areas, followed by a technical single track section where old tree stumps lie in wait before a great downhill run back to the finish at the Kwambo Club.

There is a water table at the 13km mark.

Exciting 50km route
The 50km is a good mix of single and jeep tracks with some technical sections.

The first section is the same as the 25km track, but after 17km the riders are faced with a gruelling 2km climb to the highest point where they will get to the first of two water tables.

Thereafter follows a long sweeping downhill section to get the adrenaline pumping.

After 32km the route joins up with the 25km route with a mix of single and jeep tracks back down to the finish.
The second water table is on this section at 35km.

Registration starts at 6am and closes at 8am at the Kwambo Club (GPS co-ordinates: S28 35.981 E32 04.731)
