Thanda make a point at home

Thanda well worth a share of the spoils

FAILING once again to convert a multitude of chances, Thanda Royal Zulu had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Santos at the uMhlathuze Stadium on Sunday.

The game was televised live, with replays showing both goals – a penalty apiece – should not have been given by an over-generous referee.

The TV commentators were also extremely impressed with Thanda’s overall performance, agreeing they were easily the better side and should have claimed all three points.

It wasn’t for lack of trying.

At times the Amabhubesi camped in Santos territory, on one occasion earning five consecutive corners.

Especially in the first half, Thanda laid siege on the visitors’ territory, giving the Cape defenders a torrid time but being denied by excellent goalkeeping from Moegamat Goldman.

Workaholic on the left flank, Innocent Maela was unlucky to see his fine shot deflected while Steven Ncanana and Mazwi Mncube watched as their powerful headers both flashed just wide of the woodwork.

Menzi Hlophe’s pile driver was barely kept out by Goldman, who also just got fingertips to the ball to deny Mncube’s shot trickling over the line.

Santos came back in the first 20 minutes of the second stanza before again coming under the cosh as Thanda roared back looking for the elusive win.

It wasn’t to be, but with Boikanyo Komane slotting home the penalty to neutralise Santos’ first half spot kick, Roger Sikhakhane’s men at least got some reward for another solid performance.

But they now face a heavy schedule with three games in eight days: 1 May vs Witbank Spurs (A), 4 May vs Baroka FC (A) and 7 May vs Mthatha Bucks (H).
