Zululand breeds them tough

Hume was right up front with the big boys before suffering a crash which resulted in a concussion, 12km into the race.

LOCAL cross country rider Calvin Hume showed determination and grit to win the 250cc class at the second round of the KZN Cross Country Championships held at Jolivert Farm on the South Coast.

Hume was right up front with the big boys before suffering a crash which resulted in a concussion, 12km into the race.

He had pummelled into a fence hitting his head on a fence post.

But after riding into the pits, a handful of headache tablets, the young rider got back onto his bike and caught the leading pack and eventually won his class.

The 25km track was fast flowing in and out of sugar cane breaks, before heading into gum tree plantations, with steep descents and rocky drop-offs.

There were a few water crossings with the track ending on a grass track section.

Hume has won all three races thus far in the 250cc class and will compete in Pietermaritzburg in two weeks time.
