Good turnout for inaugural Rotary ride

Searle claims 30km Rotary Club of Empangeni title

LOCAL mountain biking adventurers pumped up their tyres, greased their chains and suited up before heading down to Addison Park on Sunday morning in support of the inaugural Rotary Club of Empangeni fun ride.

There was a challenging 30km and 10km route marked out for the riders through the sugar cane fields around Empangeni.

The toddlers and tots dropped a gear and disappeared in their fun ride around the field.

Speed merchants Rupert Searle (men) and Desiree Verwey (ladies) crossed the finish line first in the 30km race with times of 1.11.49 and 1.12.55 respectively.

Skumbuzu Mthembu (29.57) and Nadia du Plessis (31.39) won the 10km men’s and ladies’ sections.

A total of 128 cyclists lined up.

Funds were raised for the club to use for local community projects.

Mike Ferraria won the lucky draw prize sponsored by Caltex John Ross Service Station.

He donated the R1 000 petrol voucher back to Rotary.
