International cricket in eShowe

Australians knock over the Rats in tour opener in eShowe

CRICKETERS never die.

This was clearly illustrated in an ‘international’ encounter between an Australian XI and the Cane Rats at the eShowe Sports Club on Saturday..

An Australian over-60 cricket team took to the field in the opening match of their tour of South Africa and Zimbabwe.

The 40-over match was played against the mostly northern KZN players, led by ‘King Rat’ Braam Cronje.

The Aussies won the match by 28 runs after scoring 195 for six wickets off 39 overs.

The Cane Rats were dismissed for 167 runs in 35 overs.

The Australian team was founded in 2005 with New South Wales and Victoria playing their first match in Sydney.

By 2011 the movement had increased with all Australian states participating.

The Australians have now four over-60 and two over-70 divisions.

The team has undertaken tours of the United Kingdom (2012), New Zealand (2013 and 2015) and South Africa in 2014.

They will be playing 13 games in Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Port Elizabeth, Knysna, Stellenbosch and Cape Town, as well as one game at Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.
