Bubbles and Ferns take touch crown

Rain fails to put a damper on heated touch finals.

THE pouring rain failed to put a damper on the action packed finals day of the McCarthy Toyota Empangeni Rugby Football Club Touch Rugby League held on Saturday at Mick Kelly Park.

Teams that had been competing in the popular annual tournament, entertained spectators as they vied for the 2015 bragging rights.

But it came down to fitness, composure, experience and slick ball handling in both the men and ladies final, which saw defending champions Black Ferns (men) and Tiny Bubbles (ladies) lifting the trophy yet again.

The ladies played first in a final which produced end-to-end action and saw the defending champions going 2-1 down into the half time break.

The experienced Bubbles team took on newbies Ninja’s in the final, which saw Bubbles come out on top 3-2.

Captain Nita van Rooyen, Jade Boyder and Jamie van Vuuren all dotted down for the Bubbles side, with sisters Bianca and Elmonique Louw crossing the whitewash for the Ninja’s outfit.

The men’s final lived up to the hype, with the Black Ferns side edging Baby Blacks out by 3 tries to 1.

JP Rossouw scored for the Baby Blacks side with Duncan Biyela, Dylan Coulson and Jaco Pretorious scoring for the Black Ferns outfit.

Referees Beyers Habig, Magnus Oosthuizen and Andre Geldenhuys took control on the day, with Dagwood van Vuuren organising the entire tournament.
