Richards Bay pupils do the rumble

The tournament pitted pupils against each other to the delight of parents and classmates.

THURSDAY night was fight night at Richards Bay High School when 20 boxers took to the ring to battle it out for glory.

Organised by Freddie Rafferty Boxing, the tournament pitted pupils against each other to the delight of parents and classmates.

Boxing aficionado Ray Peyters was in attendance to oversee the refereeing.

One match was stopped as soon as it became clear the weight difference between the fighters was too great.

‘It is key that we keep safety in mind,’ said Peyters. ‘Boxing is a hard sport and these boys need their eyes for the next 60 years at least. It is meant to be fun, not dangerous.’

The tournament was mainly in aid of raising funds for the RBHS cricket team and many of the fights came to split decisions.

Peyters also announced that it would be his last year officiating at the tournament.

Adriaan Cornelius walked away with the title of Best Boxer for the night after a fierce three rounds against a heavier opponent.
