Harris sets high goals at IWAS in Russia

Besides the competitive aspect of the trip, Harris is also applying for a change in classification.

EMPANGENI disabled swimmer Quinton Harris is pumped up and ready to hit the water today (Tuesday) in Sochi, Russia, where he is competing in the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports (IWAS) World Games.

Besides the competitive aspect of the trip, Harris is also applying for a change in classification, which will set him on a more even playing field on the international circuit, particularly as he has been included in the South African squad to compete at the Rio Olympics 2016.

He is being accompanied by his coach Claire Swan, and able assistant Kenny Sloane, both of Empangeni.

Harris, who sustained a spinal injury during a moto-x accident, was previously classified in the S5 class during his last assessment in Scotland in 2014, but is hoping to be reclassified during this trip to qualify to compete internationally in the S3 and S2 classes.

On social media today, Harris called for prayers and thanked the scores of Zululanders who have rallied to support him both emotionally and financially.

Meanwhile, messages of encouragement are flooding in via his Facebook page – Quinton Harris Para-Swimmer.
