Nelson and Verwey claim the Big 1

GALLERY: Young and old took part in the Big 1 MTB race hosted by Grantleigh Schools.

JOSHUA Nelson (men) and Desiree Verwey (women) rode in top gear all along the 50km forestry off-road route at The Big 1 MTB race hosted by Grantleigh Schools on Sunday, claiming the main titles in times of 1:42:15 and 2:04:17 respectively.

A total of 441 riders took on the challenging dirt tracks in the Mapoza area in the 10km, 25km and 50km races.

Youngster Justin Preston dropped a gear and outpaced 196 riders to claim the 10km title in 25:10.

Sakhele Mthembu took the honours in the 25km event in a time of 55:45.

Results

10km men – 1 Justin Preston 25:10, 2 Luke Drummond 25:11 and 3 Calvin Hill 25:42.

Ladies – 1 Gwen Farland 25:59, 2 Jordan Louw 28:12 and 3 Marelize Berning 28:44.

25km men – 1 Sakhele Mthembu 55:45, 2 Devon Baird 58:15 and 3 Mason Harrison 58:38.

Ladies – 1 Chloe Bateson 1:05:02, 2 Simone Scrase 1:10:01 and 3 Megan Harrison 1:10:11.

50km men – Joshua Nelson 1:42:15, 2 Deno van Heerden 1:42:36 and 3 Henry Mayer 1:42:38.

Ladies – 1 Desiree Verwey 2:04:17, 2 Candice Farland 2:18:23 and 3 Jo Mackenzie 2:21:35.
