Du Preez, De Villiers to face Pumas

Stalwarts return to Bok fold.

AFTER a much inspired Bok performance last weekend against the Kiwi’s at Emirates Stadium in Johannesburg, the team will play their penultimate rugby championship match against the Pumas in Durban.

Almost forgotten scrumhalf Fourie du Preez has made a return to the fold after not playing a Test since June last year.

Despite Ruan Pienaar having improved in his all round game and having impressed so far in the Rugby Championship campaign, Fourie still remains Meyer’s number one choice for the World Cup in September.

Great news for Bok coach Meyer, is that Jean de Villiers is set to return to the match-day 22 for the game against the Pumas, which boosts the depth in the mid-field.

Damian de Allende and Jesse Kriel who have partnered well thus far in the competition, with the youngster (Kriel) impressing, will make it hard for the return of De Villiers.

Another exciting aspect is that Duane Vermeulen was out in the park training again, which certainly ruffled feathers in the loose trio who have been vying for a spot in the Bok side.

With so much talent and healthy competition in the squad, heading into the World Cup, Meyer will have his hands full come selection time.

After two close loses in the Rugby Championship, one must think that next weekend will see a convincing victory over the Pumas at Growthpoint Kings Park in Durban.

Meyer still needs to answer the critics who argue the experienced ‘old timers’ selection over the in-form talented ‘young guns’.

But Jake White proved in 2007 that one does not need to win a Rugby Championship to lift the Webb Ellis trophy.

Only time will tell how this mixed Bok side will do come September.
