Rhinos escape relegation zone

Rhinos managed to escape the jaws of the promotion/relegation zone after their 23-21 defeat against UKZN Impis.

DESPITE going down 21-23 to UKZN Impis in Pietermaritzburg (PMB) on Saturday in the last Fidelity Security Moor Cup clash of the season, Rhinos 1 have managed to escape the promotion/relegation zone on superior points difference.

PMB Collegians scored a four-try bonus point win (40-29) against Amanzimtoti on Friday evening, which left their final tally on 12 points for the season, one ahead of Rhinos, with Rhinos still having to play on Saturday.

Rhinos had to score a bonus point victory, win or lose, to leapfrog PMB Collegians and end on 12 points to avoid the promotion/relegation zone on superior points difference, which they managed to achieve losing by less than seven points.

Rhinos came out firing, fuelled by the knowledge and expectations of what was required from them to rescue the club, which resulted in a 14-13 lead going into the half-time break.

Rhinos lead 21-20 with seconds left on the clock, but a penalty for the home side after the hooter robbed the Zululand side of a close victory.

Victor Campher, Thokozane Mdluli and Clinton Woodley all dotted down for the visiting side, with captain Jors Dannhauser kicking all three conversions.

With the Moor Cup done and dusted, all teams now move into the Castle Murray Cup competition.

Rhinos will take on Westville Old Boys in Westville on Saturday in the qualifying round – kick-off at 2:30pm.

The team will stay relatively the same for this weekend’s game.

‘This weekend’s fixture is a must win for us, as we do not want to compete in the Junior Murray Cup competition.

‘After this weekend’s win, we will aim at making it to the semi-finals. We want to be competitive and better our performances and results from last season,’ said Dannhauser.
