eShowe thump listless Empangeni

Empangeni 1 went down 36-7 to eShowe at home on Friday evening.

EMPANGENI’S performance on Friday evening against eShowe in a Van Rooyen Cup rugby fixture at Mick Kelly Park was akin to Eskom load-shedding.

The home side appeared powerless and bereft of energy, leading to a 36-7 defeat.

eShowe came out firing on all cylinders and never took their foot off the accelerator.

The visitors opened the scoring in a matter of minutes through a try by Phakene Biyela, which was converted by Gladwell Maduna.

Moments later inside centre Silvester Vollenhowen crashed over for a second try, which Maduna again converted to take the score to 14-0.

The visitors’ dominance in the scrums, breakdowns and general loose play paid off when Sphephelo Mabuza crossed the chalk for eShowe’s third try, to which Maduna added the two conversion to extend the lead to 21-zip.

Empangeni had some consolation just before the half-time break, when Njabulo Mathaba dotted down, with Martin Coetzee converting to put the home side on the scoreboard.

eShowe continued to attack and play expansively, which resulted in a penalty conversion from Maduna.

Sthembiso Zungu then claimed the bonus point try for the visitors in the 60th minute, with Maduna converting to take the lead to 31-7.

Thandile Mzukwa then put the final nail in the home team’s coffin, crossing the whitewash to end the game at 36-7.
