Empangeni claim cricket crown

Empangeni Rugby Football Club were crowned first division 20/20 champions after beating Felixton Cricket Club by 6 runs.

EMPANGENI Rugby Football Club beat defending champions Felixton Cricket Club by six runs in the first division 20/20 finals played at Addison Park on Saturday, to claim the title and the bragging rights for the 2014/15 season.

Both teams headed into the finals with top players in form, which resulted in such a tight ending to the game.

Felixton captain Mohammed Hoosen won the toss and elected to bowl first on a hard, flat track that produced slight turn and a tennis ball bounce.

Empangeni got off to a slow start, reaching 50 after 11 overs.

But thanks to great knocks from Simon Savides (38) and Eugene Zwart (24) the team reached 130/3.

Hoosen 2/23 in 4 and Duncan Keal 1/20 in 4 were the pick of the home team’s bowling attack.

Felixton got off to a dismal start, losing both openers in the first two overs of the game.

But the middle order consolidated well and kept the home side in the game.

Keal smashed a well played 45 under pressure, which left six runs needed off the last ball.

But enter Stephan Joubert.

The spinner took two wickets in the last over of the game, bowling out the number 10 batsmen off the last ball to cement victory for his side.
