Lifesavers compete at SA Champs

Lifesavers go for glory.

RICHARDS Bay’s professional lifesavers will test themselves against the country’s best when they compete at the SA Masters Championships in Durban this weekend.

And while this will be their first competition in quite a while, the team is confident they can do well – especially if surf conditions are wild and rough.

‘We will have the advantage in big seas and huge waves, as this is what we commonly experience and train in at Alkantstrand,’ said Beach Manager and team member Shakes Hiraman.

A number of strenuous events are on the programme, including long and short surf swims and beach runs, malibu boards, surfskis, beach sprints, flags and the Iron Man contest.

One of the local men to watch when it comes to individual performances is Thulani Nzama, a fitness freak who is sure to excel in the board events.

• The public is reminded that there is a lifesaving club operating at Alkantstrand Beach, training every Sunday from 9am.

People interested in lifesaving can contact Nkosi Ngcobo on 073 1574625 or simply visit the beach and speak to a lifeguard for more information.
