Club cricket wrap up

Empangeni Rugby Club left their form from the previous weekend at home, when they went down to the Schools XI at Addison Park on Saturday.

ROUND two of the Weber Cup saw all three scheduled games being played, with Richards Bay Rugby Club having a bye.

The pupils handed the Empangeni lads a crash course in cricket, when dismissing the home side for 127 runs.

Simon Savides 33 and Dylan Pyper 26 were the top scorers for the Empangeni outfit.

Allrounder Trevor Kietzmann ripped through the batting attack, ending with figures of 5/13 in 5 overs.

Leg spinner Reikert Viljoen ripped it up, giving the ball flight and got reward with 4 wickets in 5 overs.

The School lads took to the crease for a brief visit before reaching the target with the loss of 2 wickets.

Kietzmann 44 not out and Neil Jordan 37 not out got their team over the line.

Mark Shorkend (2/37 in 5 overs) was the best of the Empangeni bowlers.

Close encounter

The match at Grantleigh School between Umfolozi and the Unizulu XI on Saturday was a closer affair, with Umfolozi claiming a 4 wicket win.

The students took the the pitch first and managaed to knock 198 all out in 42.3 overs.

N Gumede 49 and F Buthelzezi 29 were the top scorers for the Unizul XI.

Otto Rode 2/21 got success with the nut in hand for the Umfolozi team.

The home side then took to the crease and reached 199/6 to claim the win.

Opening victory

In the last clash of the weekend, Village travelled to eShowe on Sunday in hopes of rectifying the previous weekend’s humiliation.

eShowe who had a bye last weekend, looked to get their season off to a winning start, which they did.

Village batted first and put on a dismal 103 all out in 27 overs.

Ali Iqbal 2/6 and Angus Cramer 5/36 were the main destroyers for the home team.

Having to reach 103 was never going to be an issue.

eShowe passed the total in the 28th over, with the loss of 5 wickets.

Malcolm Munro smashed 28 not out to top score for the home side.

Captain Brandon Foxcroft 3/30 in 8.2 overs and Piet Pieterse 2/16 in 5 overs were the pick of the Village attack.

All teams will be in action this weekend, apart from Village who has a bye.
