Easy win for Schools XI

Schools XI teach Empangeni a lesson on the cricket pitch.

THE Schools XI cricket team claimed a deserved win on Saturday when they comfortably beat Empangeni Rugby Club by eight wickets in a Weber Cup encounter at Addison Park.

With the sun shining but the wind gusting, Empangeni took to the crease and scored 127 runs all out. Simon Savidies was the top scorer, slogging out 33 runs followed by Dylan Pyper on 26.

However, the Schools XI squad’s bowling was just too good, with Trevor Kietzmann the destroyer in chief taking 5 wickets in 5 overs while only conceding 13 runs.

He was backed up by Reikert Viljoen who took 4 wickets in 5 overs.

In reply, the Schools side, after a slow scoring first few overs, started to knock the ball around the field making the Empangeni bowlers look a little shell-shocked and the fielders slow.

Kietzmann cracked out 44 runs (not out), even after been clouted on the head by a fast ball and having to leave the field for a few minutes to stop the bleeding.

Neil Jordan contributed an equally impressive 37 runs not out.

Mark Shorkend’s 2 /37 in 5 overs was the best of the Empangeni bowlers.
