Back to the nets for Village

Village beaten in their opening Weber Cup clash at Empangeni Rugby Club at Addison Park.

VILLAGE learnt the old adage ‘catches wins matches’ after a dismal fielding performance.

This included numerous dropped catches and missfields, resulting in the newly-promoted side having to chase leather all over Addison Park all day long.

Village opened their 2014/15 season with a 250 run drubbing from Empangeni Rugby Club in a Weber Cup game held on Saturday at Addison Park, Empangeni.

The Rugby Club won the toss and elected to bat first on a pitch with nice grass cover, which made the ball come onto the bat.

Bowling second at Addison is normally an advantage, as the cracks and dried-up turf aids the bowlers.

But as the season is still a spring chicken, this did not happen.

Dewald Wessels was the talisman for the Rugby Club, knocking 126 at the crease, and was supported by opening batsmen Dillon Pyper who cracked 94.

Simon Savides also got in on the action, notching 67 not out, which left his team’s score at 332/3 after 45 overs.

Willie van Rooyen 1/39 in 5 overs and captain Brandon Foxcroft 2/45 in 9 overs were the pick of the Village bowlers.

Village’s time at the crease was brief visit, getting dismissed for 82.

Frans Pelzer 23, Brandon Foxcroft 21 and Hennie Swart 10 not out were the only batsmen to reach double figures.

Empangeni captain Robert Gouws led from the front, taking 5 wickets for 40 runs in 9 overs.

Lazar Holmes took two wickets for seven runs in 2.3 overs.

All the bowlers picked up one scalp.

Village will take on eShowe in eShowe on Sunday, with the Empangeni Rugby Club taking on the Schools XI at Addison Park on Saturday.
