Iron Ison goes large

Local strongmen dominated at the National Powerlifting and Bench Press Competition

ZANE ‘Iron’ Ison has done it again – smashing five age group world records at the recent national powerlifting and bench press competition at Train Gym in Durban.

Sadly for him the world records cannot be recognised as there has to be three international referees verifying these records. However the SA records he holds currently are better than his four official world records.

What Ison’s Durban feats at least prove is that he all set to officially chase the world marks at the World Powerlifting Championships in Argentina next year.

Local power athletes Francois Kruger, Freddie Snyman and Frank Janse van Rensburg joined Ison in the Durban competition hosted by Iron Gladiators in association with the Rhino Powerlifting Club and GPC South Africa.

Ison won the masters category and finished third overall amongst all the categories.

Ison bettered his lifts as follows: squat 300kg, bench 195kg, deadlift 295kg, bench only 195kg and total points 790. All of these were better than the current world records for his age group.

Snyman won the best lift of the day in the under 100kg open division with a new SA record.

Kruger claimed a SA record in the equipped section in the junior division, while Janse van Rensburg also recorded a national bench press record in the sub-master division.
