The lion roars in Kwambo

Mud and sweat at the Miway Big 5 Kwambo Lion challenge

THE final leg of the MiWay Big 5 Series was held on Sunday with riders taking on the Build it Kwambo Lion which had its fair share of mud making riding difficult in places.

Tyronne White continued his domination of the 50km men’s race finishing in a time of 1:57:00, seven minutes ahead of second-placed Mitchell Ginsberg and Werner Moolman in third, only 30 seconds behind Ginsberg.

In the female race Nedene Cahill (02:25:33) was first across the line, with second-placed Desiree Verwey taking second place 10 minutes later and Isabel Moolman in third.

In the 25km male race, U16 rider Joshua Nelson was three minutes ahead of second-placed Samuel Erasmus who clocked in at 00:56:53.

Rupert Searle was barely a minute behind Erasmus.

The female race was closely contested with Althea Grebe, Jenna Venter and Tracy Van Zyl finishing in the top three, with one minute, 10 seconds.

The 10km race has grown in popularity and the youngster have shown that they can be just as competitive as their senior riders.

In the U13 boys race William Paxton, Danken Ellis and Sizwe Sibanis made up the podium, while in the U11 the top three riders were Warren Moolman, Kyle Schnuir and Kyle Hulley.

The girls also had a good morning ride with the top three places in the U13 section being filled Jade Louw, Hannah Volker and Kirsty Richardson.

The U11 podium finishers were Paige Vorster, Caitlyn Woods and Chenneille Hall.

The series have delivered on its promise of taking riders to some of the most beautiful spots in Zululand, each with its own set of challenges.

Sand, mountains and mud, mixed with scenery only possible from a bicycle opened up a new world to competitors.

Once the post-mortem is complete for the 2013 series, planning will start for next year’s series.

With the five races completed, the action now moves to the Zululand Multi Sports Club in Richards Bay where the final prize giving and a spit braai is planned for Saturday, 5 October.

Before the prize giving, which takes place at 2pm, there will be various events in which to participate including swimming in the bay, riding the Fish Eagle Trail while the children can play on the slip and slide.

The spit braai will be served from 4.30pm at a cost of R110 for adults and R50 for children under 13 years old.

Bookings are essential on info@big5mtb.co.za after which an invoice will be issued to facilitate EFT payment or register pay on ROAG.
