More than just a super coach

Netball coach, Magda du Plessis has more than 16 years of coaching experience under her belt

ACROSS the globe, sport bring people together.

Local netball coach Magda du Plessis believes that sport provides building blocks for refining character and together with proper coaching, can eventually become stepping stones to many endeavours.

Magda relocated to Empangeni over 16 years ago.

Shortly after settling in Empangeni she was approached by netball players to help revive the then dormant Empangeni Netball Club.

Since then she has been a coach, president, umpire and player at the club.

She is passionate about sport, especially team sport. Even while running her own business on a full-time basis as well as being a wife and mother of two, Magda still managers to put in many hours towards coaching the Empangeni High first netball team, the Empangeni Netball Club as well as the uThungulu netball team.

Under Magda’s mentorship the uThungulu male netball team managed to recently win gold at the SA championships and two players from the Empangeni Netball Club were selected to play for the Protea squad.

Many players coached by Magda come from disadvantaged backgrounds and they are constantly looking for sponsorships for assistance with kits, accommodation and transport when travelling to tournaments. Sponsorships have been a major challenge over the years and she hopes to get more sponsors involved.

‘Netball is a highly skilled game and like every sport needs to be implemented and continuously reinforced. I focus on technical and tactical training which includes fitness drills, ball skills, court skills, mental skill training, nutrition and hydration and individual emotional development’, explains Magda.

Her motivation comes from seeing a difference being made in an individuals’ life and is only satisfied as a coach when she sees growth of a player, especially with regard to their confidence.

Madga achieves her successes by living to make a difference every day, always giving her best, never giving up and ultimately believing that it can be done.
