UPDATE: Injured rhinos on the mend

Although one female has deeper wounds than the others, all three rhinos are thought to make a full recovery.

THE three White Rhinos and calf that survived a poaching attack in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park (HiP) last month, are well on the road to recovery.

‘Despite having their horns hacked off at the base, all are managing and healing well and the calf has settled in and is feeding happily from his mother,’ reported Wild Vet on Facebook.

‘Although the healing was better than expected, we decided the female with the deepest wound should be assessed by other veterinary colleagues to decide on the best course of action’.

The vets agreed to place a fibreglass cast over the rhino’s open sinus cavities to facilitate healing.

While the calf had behaved somewhat aggressively towards the vets who were treating his mother the previous week, the situation has improved.

‘While treating her the previous week the little guy was pretty aggro, head butting me frequently and dishing out a few bruises, but yesterday he was as chilled as anything, feeding from mom while she lay sleeping on her side and only complaining when we rolled her onto her stomach and temporarily cut off his milk supply’.

It is believed all three rhinos will make a full recovery.
