BLOGGING THE VIEW: 7 More affordable destinations for South Africans

Keen to celebrate Tourism Month with an overseas getaway? Here are some of the more cost-effective options for South Africans

Celebrating Tourism Month is easy in our beautiful country which boasts some of the world’s best sites and activities – but it would be nice to explore some other sites and cultures as well.

While the GNU is doing much to strengthen the rand, travelling internationally is still a big financial stretch.

However, there are a few more rand-friendly destinations you could consider or save for a future visit.

1. Thailand
If you’re in the mood for a beach holiday where the food is delicious and plentiful, Thailand is a great destination.

You can enjoy a free six-week tourist visa so there’s no visa cost, and the price of everyday items like food, transport and accommodation are comparable to South Africa. You can swim, visit temples, eat, enjoy great spa treatments, go golfing… the list is endless.

2. Indonesia
Paradise awaits you in Indonesia where a series of islands make this the ideal relaxation spot.

Bali is the most well-known island and still reasonably priced, but you can find even more cost savings at the smaller Indonesian islands such as the Gilis.

3. Mauritius
While not the cheapest destination, Mauritius can be a more cost-effective beach holiday when you opt for one of their all-inclusive offerings.

This way, you make your money back by eating and drinking your way through your stay! It’s a short four-hour flight from South Africa, with no need for a visa, incredible beaches, and great resorts with family-friendly activities.

4. Turkey
With its ancient history and rich culture, Turkey remains a top destination for South African travellers.

You require only a free eVisa, there are affordable flights to Turkey, and the food and accommodation are cost-effective.

You will enjoy visiting the Blue Mosque and Grand Bazaar, as well as the many other great (cat-friendly!) tourist sites.

5. India
You will be hard-pressed to find a more colourful and vibrant destination than India, and with our cultural connection, this is a must for South Africans.

It is a big and busy country so there are lots of affordable options, with Mumbai and Delhi more cost-efficient than Goa, plus you can haggle on everything.

The food is unmatched, and there is so much to see and do.

6. Sri Lanka
Another budget-friendly Asian destination is Sri Lanka which also has deliciously spicy food that won’t break the bank.

There are so many interesting sites, from the ancient ruins and iconic temples to jungle-clad mountains and sandy beaches.

7. Hungary
If a European holiday is on the cards, Hungary is your best bet. It has lively markets selling affordable street food, with many free walking tours and entry into certain Budapest museums.

Strolling around the country, you can take in the stunning architecture and possibly warm up in a thermal bath before hitting the local nightlife.

If these are still too much of a stretch, you can start by being a tourist in your own backyard.

South Africa has so many great sites to see and activities to do, and September is the best time to start!
