BLOGGING THE VIEW: 8 Father’s Day activity ideas to try this year

Celebrating Father's Day will have to be different this year, here are 8 activities to try

WITH empty pockets and the third wave now upon us, celebrating this Father’s Day could be a bit trickier than years gone by (although possibly not last year).

Fortunately, it’s not a day for consumer items but rather about celebrating the fathers and father figures out there who are making a positive impact on the upcoming generations.

So why not show some love on Sunday, 20 June by making a memory for the ‘old man’ rather than spending unnecessarily?

1. Braai time
Outdoor events are safest at this time, and with South Africa’s wonderful winter sunshine, having a braai is one of the best ways to celebrate together. If a braai seems like too much work, you can easily pack a picnic lunch with all his favourite foods to be enjoyed in the garden, a park, or even at the beach

2. Head into the wild
If your dad is a man of the great outdoors, why not get the family to head out to the nearest game or nature reserve and simply enjoy a day bonding in the wild? This could be a spot of fishing for the keen anglers, a nature hike or cycle for the sporting types, or just a leisurely game drive for those wanting to relax

3. Have a music festival
It’s still going to be some time before we can head to live music concerts again, so why not bring the concert to your dad? Find his favourite artists and stream their best concerts online. For the less tech-savvy dads out there, this will be a mind-blowing experience. Plus, you’re not hassling with queues and crowds!

4. Put on a show
Young children putting on a performance is always a welcome memory for any parent, so why not assist the youngsters with some ideas? This is a great one to film and then re-watch in years to come. You can also show previous home videos or photograph slides for a trip down memory lane

5. Host a tournament
A bit of competitive sports always makes for good banter and family rivalry. This Father’s Day, organise some fun competitions such as backyard rugby, soccer, croquet or bowls. You can even have a series of activities such as a ‘Survivor’ challenge, with prizes being ‘no washing dishes’ or ‘no taking out the rubbish’ up for grabs. Maybe give dad a bit of an advantage though…

6. Tasting time
Go get a few different beers, wines or even soft drinks for everyone to sample. You can even do some blind tastings to check dad’s real knowledge of his favourite brew!

7. Family board time
The days of playing board games with family are back! Go dust off that box of Monopoly or Cluedo and get everyone together for a lively and competitive time. If you don’t have any board games, you could just get a pack of cards and play a round of ‘Go Fish’ or ‘Snap’

8.     A scavenger hunt
Everyone loves a good scavenger hunt! You can hide a few gift items (these can be small like biscuits and a beer) around the garden, and the children must help dad with the search.

Even if you just let dad sleep in and choose what he wants to do, then he’s sure to have a wonderful Father’s Day.
