5 most in-demand jobs of the future

The great thing about future jobs is that they will be much more fluid than previous traditional roles

After a year of interrupted schooling, the matrics of 2020 have finally learnt the outcome of 12 years of dedicated learning, with 76.2% achieving a matric pass, and significantly more achieving bachelor’s passes this year than in 2019.

Now that the first educational phase is over, many matriculants are looking at potential career paths. And, if the past year has taught us anything, it’s that choosing a career needs to take into account a vastly changing society, economy and workspace. Here’s a look at some of the jobs that will continue to increase in demand over the next few years.

1. Education

It might seem like a traditional career path to follow, but teaching will remain a valuable career in South Africa and beyond. Fortunately, the role of the teacher is adapting in this new digital age, and people looking at a career in education won’t have to worry about standing in front of a chalkboard and monotonously spewing out facts.

They can actually teach from the comfort of their homes via online learning platforms that are fast becoming a mainstream option. In addition, a career in teaching opens up many doors for travel, as well as the option of private tutoring or coaching.

2. Healthcare

There’s nothing quite like a pandemic to put the value of healthcare into perspective. And this sector will continue to need professionals filling a variety of roles as modern equipment and medication continue to improve life expectancy. But more than the doctors and nurses, there are many positions that can be filled in terms of the healthcare sector, including administrative, financial and marketing.

3. Data analysts

A growing trend in modern business is collecting and analysing data for more informed business decision-making. There is now a wealth of available data in every company, and by using Business Intelligence, managers, directors and stakeholders are able to learn what’s working in an organisation and what’s not, as well as emerging trends to leverage. People who are able to learn skills related to big data will continue to be in demand, in South Africa and globally.

4. Design

Creatives will find their place in the future by harnessing the technology available as a way to drive that creative vision. Although many jobs are set to be automated going forward, creative thinking and innovative techniques will continue to drive industries.

Whether it’s in advertising and entertainment or automotive and electronics, there will always be a space for creative expression that is coupled with technological skill.

5. Digital co-ordination

From business strategies to marketing, everything is going digital these days and this phenomenon is set to grow in the future.

Attaining the skills related to digital media, marketing and communication will be worthwhile in almost every sector of modern business. The great thing about future jobs is that they will be much more fluid than previous traditional roles where you stuck to exactly what you studied at a tertiary institution without learning anything new.

The ability to work from anywhere also allows for so much more freedom – no more 9-to-5 in a dreary office – anywhere is your office if you have an electronic device and internet. Just get the right skill set, attitude and embrace the innovation!
