BLOGGING THE VIEW: 10 cheap DIY tips to get the house in shape this spring

Engage in some 'home therapy' by revitalising the interior with these 10 simple and cost-effective tips!

Spring is always a great time to reassess the home and decide what works, and what doesn’t.

However, with 2020 being the year it has been, finances – and patience – are in short supply.

Fortunately, you can re-energise your home’s aesthetics, and soothe your overall anxiety, with some cost-effective home DIY solutions.

Revitalise old furniture
Buying new furniture is always a big expense, but often your furniture has some real value – it just needs a bit of an upgrade. By simply repainting, re-varnishing, or re-covering your old furniture, you will completely transform the look, and have something to enjoy for a few more years.

Swap outdated fixtures
Something as simple as replacing existing light switches can really modernise the home’s interior. But if you’re looking for something more drastic, then replacing light fittings and old ceiling fans can transform the home and add real value.

Paint key areas
Paint can be very expensive, but rather than repainting the entire home, simple pops of colour through an accent wall, painted ceiling or furniture repainting will make a real difference.

Get some greenery
It’s springtime, and what better way to celebrate than with some plants indoors? Freshly cut flowers in a vase is a great start, but you can also consider investing in a few durable indoor plants to add some greenery and life to the home.

Invest in a rug
They’re simple and can be found at many cost-effective home stores. Rugs bring in a splash of colour and, in the words of The Big Lebowski, ‘really tie the room together’.

Streamline electrics
Our growing reliance on electronics has resulted in an increased number of electrical sockets, cords and cables. If you have plug extensions, consider nailing them to the wall. If you have many cords and cables, then try fastening them together or hiding them behind furniture to prevent clutter.

Clean up your tiles
Give your home a fresh look by investing in some tile and grout cleaner. This is particularly effective in bathrooms where mildew build-up can leave your tiles looking extremely old and unclean.

Add some mirrors
If your interior needs some light, or you live in a smaller space, then investing in a few wall mirrors can make all the difference. A simple, frameless mirror is not a major expense, and you can either replace your older mirrors, or add some new ones.

Go antique shopping
You can find all manner of household treasures at second-hand furniture and antique stores. Wear your mask, sanitise and socially distance as you stroll through a store, looking for items that can work in your home.

Rearrange
Sometimes all you really need to do is move the furniture around to create a whole new look. You can move your bed to another wall in the room, change side tables and chairs around, or even rearrange your entire lounge. This is the most cost-effective way to revitalise the home this spring!
