BLOGGING THE VIEW: Six ways to celebrate Mother’s Day in lockdown

To all the fathers of young children out there, make sure you really go big with the Mother’s Day lockdown spoiling this year. Remember, Father’s Day is just around the corner!

Despite having weeks – literally – to prepare for this day, somehow, it’s a mad scramble to get something special organised for Mother’s Day.

And the lockdown restrictions don’t help much either. Fathers who used to rely on schools for those home-made gift items are now being forced to think out the box. And those with moms north of 65 are having to get extra creative this year.

But not to worry, there is still time to organise for Mother’s Day 2020… and here’s some ideas to get you started.

Get baking

If you’re able to drop something off with mom, then a home-made baked treat is delicious, considerate and – in the case of this recipe – easy to make!

For something quick and tasty, the three-ingredient shortbread cookies are a win.

The three ingredients are butter (240g), icing sugar (1/2 cup) and plain sugar (2 cups).

Method

Cream the butter and icing sugar

Sift in the flour and mix until combined

Dust counter with icing sugar and roll dough into a log shape

Wrap dough in grease-proof paper, then chill in fridge for half an hour

Pre-heat oven to 150 degrees Celcius

Slice dough into cookies

Bake for 15 minutes – and voila!

Online courses

There are so many great courses available online, and now is really the time to delve into this digital option.

If your mom has expressed a great interest in a certain hobby – whether it’s cooking, learning a new language or woodworking – there is undoubtedly a course to be found on the internet.

You could even sign up as well and share in the learning experience!

Care packages

Lockdown or not, everyone loves a good care package.

Fortunately, a lot more shops are open now. Put on your mask, get hold of your nearest hand sanitiser and go purchase a few of your mom’s favourite items for a care package.

It’s best to make arrangements about dropping off the package ahead of time.

Host an online family gathering

You can use any online video conferencing platform to get the whole family together using appropriate physical distancing.

Zoom, Microsoft Teams or WhatsApp video are some of the ways to connect with the family this Mother’s Day.

You could even organise a Mother’s Day-themed family quiz to keep the gathering engaged online.

Video collage

One of the many benefits of smart phones is the numerous clips of family videos on the device.

However, often these aren’t viewed again for years. This Mother’s Day, you could compile a fun video collage featuring some family favourites as a way to really spoil your mom this year.

At-home spa

For children lucky enough to be in lockdown with moms this year, why not do an extra special pamper day for mom.

Wake up early and give the house a good clean, make her breakfast in bed and then give her (at least) an hour just to enjoy some ‘me time’.

She definitely needs it this year!
