I HAVE just completed a basic socio-economic study of uMhlathuze for personal purposes and must admit I learnt a lot about the area during my research.

One aspect I dealt with in my report was how hard our municipality works to promote tourism and industry in our area.

Amongst other things, I included pictures and comments about our many beautiful and unspoiled beaches, including Alkantstrand and all the recreational facilities which have been added or improved upon over the years.

I was aware that there had been some erosion of the beach owing to high tides in more recent years, but was alarmed by the photograph and article published in a recent edition of your newspaper showing how bad the situation really is now.

What a contrast from the lovely level and wide beach of past years!

The Easter holidays are nearly upon us and many holidaymakers are likely to come and visit our shores.

I would therefore appeal to uMhlathuze authorities to do all and anything they can to remedy this sad situation as soon as possible.

We are all aware of global warming and how the sea is encroaching on land all around the world, yet there must be something that can be done to save our beach.

In addition, if there are any manmade structures which may have assisted the forces of nature to result in this level of erosion, it really needs to be addressed so that we can continue to draw ocean loving holidaymakers to our fair city.
