IN reply to Casual Bystander (ZO 28 November – ‘Handy solutions to two problems’).

In recent years we have seen a substantial increase in the abuse and disregard for public and private property.

Urinating in a very public area is not confined to the roads, but any wall in the CBD.

I believe there is a bigger issue to address, namely the criminals that are pasting the advert for pain-free abortions on the parking and traffic signs and practically anything that is stationary.

Beside the moral issue, it is defacing our City and personally I see it is a reflection of our local authorities’ moral inaptitude to do something about it.

I have laid a criminal case with the police, but they have not made any progress with regards to apprehending the culprits .

I have also voiced my concerns to members of the uMhlathuze Municipality’s Council and they are just as apathetic with the issue, saying that it is impossible to stop.

They did say that contractors where appointed from time to time, as finance was available, to clean up the area in removing the stickers.

I do not know what it costs, but that seem like a total waste of money. As an example, I removed the offending stickers from two of our mini substations and building on Monday and they had re-appeared by Thursday.

I do not think removing them is effective and the only solution is to apprehend the people responsible. I am well aware this may entail some clever detective work, but surely spending the money to remove them will be better spent on appointing someone to apprehend them as our local police force have little interest in trying to catch them.
