Hawker dangers on N2

Litchi sellers a danger to motorists and themselves

I FOUND the article in the Zululand Observer (2 December) written by Andrew Cornew regarding hawkers on the N2 very interesting, but wonder what Intertoll is doing about the increased number of litchi sellers at the Umvoti tollgate.

Now while this may be seen as job creation, entrepeneurship or poverty alleviation, all be it over a short season, the vendors are a danger to motorists and themselves.

While motorists are paying attention as to which booth they are going to pass through at the toll gate, they also have to dodge vendors running from one lane to another.

They also hang around where people are opening their bags and wallets to get their toll money.

Surely, if the Intertoll felt so strongly about the dangers of vendors along their road, they would also clean up their act at Umvoti.

The situation gets worse as the schools close and the traffic picks up over the holiday season.
