Gill netter drowns in island escape attempt

One of two gill netters caught in the act of poaching on Tuesday night drowned during an attempt to evade capture.

After security personnel saw the pair in a makeshift boat and attempted to apprehend them, the men abandoned their vessel and fled onto Pelican Island.

The access road was blocked and the suspects attempted to swim from the island in the direction of the NSRI base…
