While KwaZulu-Natal has been placed under a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms today (Monday), the Eastern Cape is bracing for disruptive snowfall.
The warning was issued on Sunday by the South African Weather Service (SAWS) and is in place from midday today until 11pm tonight.
“Widespread showers and thunder showers are expected over most parts of KZN, but scattered to isolated in the north except the extreme north-eastern parts,” said SAWS.
“Some of these thunderstorms may become severe over the southern parts of KZN and may be accompanied by strong, damaging winds, excessive lightning, hail or heavy downpours.”
Potential impacts include fallen trees, disruption of services due to power surges, danger to life – both human and livestock – due to lightning, and damage to structures due to hail and wind.
While the Zululand region should largely escape the severe weather, those travelling further south are urged to be vigilant on potentially wet roads.
Meanwhile, in the Eastern Cape, snow is expected over high-lying areas due to a high pressure system ridging from far south of the country, with southerly to south-easterly winds.
This will result in cold to very cold and wet conditions over much of the affected province.
