THE KZN government aims to surpass last year’s matric result by obtaining a 100% pass rate this year.

This was revealed by Premier Thami Ntuli at a press briefing in Durban on Thursday.

Last year, KZN obtained 86% and was the second-best-performing province in the country.

“We started this academic year very motivated. There was a common understanding that we needed to work hard, not only to maintain the status quo, but to reach the ultimate summit of 100%.

“We can say without hesitation that our province is ready to administer the 2024 NSC examinations. We are ready because, for the entire year, the Department of Education has been diligently and meticulously putting together the building blocks of a successful matric examination,” said Ntuli.

The province has 172 433 full-time and 34 986 part-time candidates who will start writing their final exams from today (Monday).
“We defined the objective for 2024 as being to improve from 86% to 100%, or at least 90%. In line with this objective, all 12 districts developed their own plans based on the Provincial Academic Improvement Plan” he said.

Commitment to integrity
“We want to run an exam season that is free of any irregularity. This is important for the integrity of our matric system.

“The province has put in place adequate measures that will help ensure there are no security breaches at the examination printing centres that may result in exam papers being leaked.

“On Wednesday, Education MEC Sipho Hlomuka and HoD Nkosinathi Ngcobo conducted a thorough inspection of the printing facilities, and are satisfied that stringent protocols are in place to ensure the integrity of our exam processes,” said Ntuli.

Marking of exam papers
Marking will commence on 1 December and conclude on 10 December at all 32 marking centres. All marking centres will close on 18 December after the collection of answer scripts.

“In case of inclement weather, emergency measures are in place, with SAPS and SANDF on standby to assist with the distribution and collection of examination scripts. The Department of Education has also hired four-wheel-drive vehicles to help with logistics,” he concluded.
