Severe weather warnings issued for KwaZulu-Natal as cut-off low looms

WHILE Zululand may escape the worst of it, KwaZulu-Natal is under weather warnings for severe thunderstorms and disruptive rain.

The SA Weather Service (SAWS) issued the warnings earlier today (Saturday), which are both in place from midday until 11pm tomorrow (Sunday).

A yellow level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms is set to affect the majority of the province, while an orange level 6 warning for disruptive rain is in place for south-eastern KZN.

Residents are urged to take the necessary precautions to avoid disaster.

Cut-off low
According to the SAWS, a cut-off low is developing over the southwest of South Africa tomorrow (Sunday) and is expected to impact the southern, central and eastern provinces, including the Eastern Cape and KZN, from tomorrow to Tuesday.

“Cut-off low pressure systems are notorious for resulting in severe weather during spring, including heavy rain that could lead to flooding; intense thunderstorms accompanied by hail and damaging winds,” said SAWS.

“This system is expected to result in widespread and disruptive rainfall across the coastal regions and adjacent areas in the Eastern Cape and southern and central coast of KZN, which may result in minor to significant flooding in some areas.”
