The City of uMhlathuze has urged Empangeni residents to reduce electricity consumption to avoid possible load-shedding.
This is owing to an emergency power outage which began at 7am today (Wednesday), affecting parts of Empangeni CBD, Hillview, the prison, Corrobrick, Tronox Pumpstation, Magazulu Park and Waterstone.

According to the municipality, the outage was requested by Eskom to urgently attend to the Logan Breaker in Athene substation.
“In an attempt to supply some customers with electricity, the full load was moved to Empangeni main substation.
“Due to the bad weather, it was found that the load drawn by customers was putting the network at risk of tripping, which would mean the whole of Empangeni would be without electricity,” said the municipality.
“Therefore, the only option was to request customers to reduce consumption to protect the network. Alternatively, rotational load-shedding will be implemented.”
There will be another outage between 8am and 10am tomorrow (Thursday) affecting Tronox Pumpstation, Magazulu Park, Corrobrick, Waterstone and Wellington Pumpstation to restore the network back to normal.
