Two security guards were reportedly disarmed, the vehicle in which they were travelling bombed, and money stolen during a cash-in-transit (CIT) heist in Mtubatuba on Saturday evening.

Reports indicate the heist in Qubuka area along the R618 involved five suspects who are said to have opened fire on the armoured vehicle, damaging one of its tyres which forced the vehicle to stop.

Surrounded by the suspects, it is alleged the driver and two armed guards were forced out of the vehicle before being robbed.
The police confirmed the robbery but said no one was injured during the incident.

“The suspects were using two vehicles – a white Toyota GD-6 single cab and a blue double cab Ford Ranger. They fled the scene in both vehicles after loading the money in the double cab, and headed north on a gravel road towards the Gunjaneni area,” said police spokesperson Caption Justice Hlabisa.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the police at the Crime Stop contact centre on 08600 10111 or Hlabisa SAPS on 082 5580130.
