Safety measures in place ahead of expected KZN snowfall

Focus on major KZN routes as motorists urged to delay travel

Following last weekend’s snow storm, various safety measures are being put in place, particularly along major roads in KwaZulu-Natal.

This after hundreds of motorists were stranded for an entire weekend on the N3 and other major routes owing to heavy snowfall. This resulted in one person losing their life due to hypothermia.

With snowfall again forecast for Monday and Tuesday in Ladysmith, Underberg, Drakensberg, Giants Castle and other high-lying areas, the provincial government is preparing for any eventuality.

The KZN transport department’s Road Traffic Inspectorate is establishing a satellite centre at the top of Van Reenen’s Pass to ensure quick action and road closure to prevent any entrapment.

This satellite will start operating this Saturday afternoon on a 12-hour shift.

Special focus is being placed on the N3 between Harrismith and the Tugela Toll, on the R617 between Kokstad and Underberg, on the N2 at Ingeli and the N3 at Mooi River, among others.

More than 10 graders will also be stationed on identified routes to ensure a faster response.

“We have 21 graders and we decided to ensure all of them are on standby as part of strengthening our prevention measures,” said Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma.

“We wish to indicate that the team will also be responsible for escorting trucks and vehicles to ensure there is no congestion on the roads.

“However, members of the public and motorists are urged to reschedule or postpone their journeys in anticipation of any eventuality. Prevention is better than cure.”
