WATCH: Transport department called on to fix R34 outside Empangeni

Empangeni motorists call on Department of Transport to repair R34 'danger zone' highway, riddled with deep potholes

REACHING their collective wits’ end and fearing for their lives amid dangerous driving conditions, Zululand motorists have called on the Department of Transport to repair the R34 near Heatonville, outside Empangeni, once and for all.

With construction ongoing for some four years and no end in sight amid reported land and contract disputes, motorists who regularly travel this route say the situation is adding to wear and tear costs to their vehicles.

Nine months ago, a bus was stuck in the giant potholes on the R34 near Empangeni Milling, while during last weekend’s heavy rainfall, Empangeni Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) deployed traffic officers to divert motorists onto the detour, so as to avoid the worst potholes that were filled with water and were poorly visible.
