Search ongoing for missing Sodwana Bay diver

Search and rescue operation ongoing for a diver who went missing off Sodwana Bay on Monday

A large-scale search and rescue operation was launched on Tuesday morning after a diver went missing off Sodwana Bay on Monday.

The diver, believed to be from Gauteng, reportedly went missing during a deep-sea technical dive.

The NSRI, Police Search and Rescue unit, as well as private vessels are involved in the ongoing sea search, while an SA Airforce helicopter was deployed from SAAF 15 Squadron to conduct an aerial search.

The NSRI St Lucia Station 40 responded to the call-out just after 3.30pm on Monday, launching their new rescue craft.

“The search has extended south to beyond St Lucia, with the hopes that the man surfaced and is adrift at sea,” said NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon on Wednesday.

“There remains no signs of the missing diver and an ongoing search is continuing. All thoughts are with the family of the missing man in this difficult time.”
