WATCH: Heavy snow closes major KZN routes

N3 among KZN roads still closed owing to heavy snow, motorists trapped for hours as authorities work to clear routes

Due to heavy snow and icy roads in some parts of the province, major routes have been closed since last night (Friday).

The severe weather has resulted in the closure of the N3 between Harrismith and Tugela Toll, as well as the R617 between Kokstad and Underberg. Additionally, routes such as the N2 Ingeli and N3 Mooi-River are under close observation.

The KZN Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs has again urged motorists to delay travel as the severe weather conditions are expected to continue into this (Saturday) evening.

“Residents planning to travel on these roads are strongly advised to postpone their journeys due to the current hazardous conditions.

For those already on the road, please exercise extreme caution and avoid speeding, as roads have become dangerously slippery,” Cogta stated.

Disaster management teams are making efforts to reach stranded motorists and provide necessary assistance.

“The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Disaster Management Centre is coordinating multi-sectoral interventions to provide relief and facilitate the clearing of roads where necessary,” said Cogta.

According to the KZN Department of Transport these routes have been affected:

– N11 section affected with heavy snowfall. Motorists travelling from Ladysmith are advised to not re-route towards Newcastle.

– Snow has started falling at the Greytown Area, R74 Muden Road.

– Flooding at the R102 Tongaat Old Mill River. Couple of vehicles have been caught in the flood.

– Adverse weather conditions along the N3 Toll Route are causing extremely dangerous driving conditions on the N3 Toll Route. Motorists are advised to immediately postpone travelling to the Van Reenen Pass region between the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal.

– Full snow at the Loins River to Nottingham. Driving is challenging. Vehicles are moving at 20km/h.
