Disaster teams on high alert amid KZN storm warnings

Warning of severe thunderstorms have placed KZN disaster management teams on high alert.

The Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) is responding to the level two warning issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS), with possible impacts including localised damage to infrastructure, homes, vehicles and livestock.

According to Cogta MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi, storms are expected to affect the province from 11am today (Monday) until around midnight, with the forecast including heavy rains, strong winds, lightning and the possibility of hail.

“Roads in low-lying areas are at risk of flooding, and power surges may occur due to the high probability of excessive lightning.

“Residents are urged to exercise caution during this period, and are warned that bridges and roads in flood-prone areas may be particularly dangerous.

“Outdoor activities should be avoided owing to the increased risk of injuries from lightning, hail and flooding,” said Buthelezi.

The public is encouraged to stay indoors where possible, keep clear of windows, and ensure pets and vehicles are secured in sheltered areas. Livestock should also be moved to safe locations as flying debris could pose a threat.

Cogta will continue to monitor the situation and co-ordinate with disaster management teams to respond to any emergencies.
