WATCH: Ongoing truck congestion on Richards Bay highway

Residents question when authorities will bring the truck congestion in Richards Bay under control

It was once again slow going on the John Ross this morning (Friday) from Richards Bay to Empangeni as trucks were stacked along the highway from the port, reaching back to the East Central Arterial intersection.

While the coal tipper trucks occupied only the left hand lane, this left at times only one lane for rush-hour motorists on their way to work.

With many promises from the relevant authorities to bring the truck congestion under control, residents are questioning when these will take effect.

There is some light at the end of the tunnel, however, after last week’s visit by Transport MEC Siboniso Duma to Empangeni, effectively escalating the situation to provincial government level.

After his meeting with various relevant stakeholders, Duma announced the formation of a special traffic task team charged with monitoring truck flow in problematic areas.

He said working collectively was the focus, as was accelerating the construction of road and human settlements; improving the rail network, and tapping into marine and aviation sectors to facilitate the movement of goods.
