Man disappears, leaving behind curious note

Missing Hlabisa man's family in a panic after concerning note left in bedroom

The family of a Hlabisa man who disappeared from their homestead, leaving behind only a curious note, have resorted to filing a missing person’s report.

The family of Andile Prosperity Sizwe Maxase (30) and the police have urged members of the public to assist in locating Andile, or providing information that may lead to his whereabouts.

Police spokesperson Captain Justice Hlabisa said Andile was reported as missing by his mother, Mrs Zanele Octavia Maxase, on Friday, 30 August.

“According to Mrs Maxase, her son Andile was last seen last Thursday during the day. At about 6pm on Thursday, Mrs Maxase noticed Andile’s room was dark and she went to switch on the light.

“That is when she noticed Andile’s belongings, including his certificates, ID, driver’s licence and duvet cover, were gone. There was a note that read: ‘Location: Jozini Dam RIP 1994.07.08 – 2024.09.30’,” said Hlabisa.

He added that Andile had been employed at a company in Verulam, where he had apparently gone AWOL.
Hlabisa said Andile was last seen wearing a grey T-shirt.

Andile’s mother said when she last saw him, he seemed okay and nothing untoward was apparent, adding that the note he left was concerning.

“We called his employer and asked that he notifies us should Andile report to work. Nothing has come from that side. They said they have not let go of him because they considered that he may have unknown health issues which resulted in him going AWOL,” said Zanele, adding that her son usually complained of being burdened by debt.

She added that the family has no known relatives in Jozini where Andile spent a year during his high schooling.

Anyone with information on Andile’s whereabouts is urged to contact Zanele Maxase on 060 9553628 or Captain Hlabisa on 082 5580130.
