21 lives lost in KZN weekend road carnage

Week of mourning declared following the death of 21 people in KZN road accidents

With 21 lives lost to road accidents in KwaZulu-Natal over the weekend, efforts are under way to provide support to the families of the deceased.

A two-vehicle collision on the R622 Mooi Plaza at Greytown Road claimed the lives of 11 people, while a taxi crash on the R74 Kranskop Road left 10 people critically injured and six dead.

Interventions include assisting the families with funeral arrangements, and ‘co-ordinating with Road Accident Fund visits to individual families to explain a package of assistance provided by the Department of Transport’.

“Each family is facing circumstances that are unique and therefore, our response is tailor-made to help each family go through this ordeal in a manner that shows empathy,” said MEC Siboniso Duma.

“By and large, this is the first biggest carnage on our roads under the 7th administration here in KwaZulu-Natal.

“No words can express our deepest sympathies to the families for the pain and irreparable loss of their loved ones,” he said.

Meanwhile, KZN Premier Thami Ntuli also expressed sadness following the tragic losses.

He further called on road law enforcement agencies to execute all possible measures to reduce road carnage across the province.

“The loss of life due to road accidents is unacceptable, and we must do everything in our power to prevent it.

“I call upon all law enforcement agencies to strengthen their efforts and work together to ensure our roads are safe for everyone,” said Ntuli.
