Six people killed in horrific taxi crash

Six people have tragically lost their lives in a taxi accident while travelling to Nkandla

An investigation is under way following the tragic passing of six people in an accident in Ntunjambili on yesterday (Saturday).

The deceased, all women and believed to be MK Party members, were travelling in a taxi from Escourt to Nkandla.

According to reports, the driver experienced brake failure in Ntunjambili, losing control of the taxi which then overturned and caught fire.

The taxi was transporting 17 passengers.

Ten occupants sustained minor injuries whilst five women were declared dead at the scene. The injured passengers were taken to Ntunjambili Hospital.

The MEC for Transport and Human Settlement in the province, Siboniso Duma has expressed condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased.

“We wish to announce that we have ordered a thorough investigation into this accident.

“We have brought in the national Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), Department’s Road Traffic Inspectorate and the South African Police Service,” said MEC Duma.

“The main focus is to determine whether there is negligence or to ascertain the root cause of the incident.

“We do this to prevent recurrence and, where necessary, ensure that criminal prosecution is undertaken. This is part of ensuring and displaying Zero Tolerance.”
