Put a spring in your anti-drug fun walk

The annual Sanca/Zululand Observer 'Walk Away from Drugs' in Richards Bay this weekend

All is on track for the 18th annual Sanca/Zululand Observer ‘Walk Away from Drugs’ which takes place from the Zululand Yacht Club on Saturday, 31 August.

Participants will each receive a hot dog on arrival, thanks to Lakeside SPAR and Bluff Meat Supplies, and a medal at the finish courtesy of Power Group – and a whole lot of fun in between.

The walk itself, from the beautiful yacht club grounds and along the dirt road to the Bay Hall and back, is not a race and there are no prizes for winners.

“The idea is to enjoy the beginning of spring and the positive atmosphere a stroll through the lovely beach environment brings,” said Sanca Zululand director Shireen Sahadev.

We want to show young people that there are many healthy alternatives when it comes to choice of lifestyle and what gives you a ‘high’.

“For that reason, we are also privileged to start the day with a karate demonstration and, once again, Sensei Kobus Riekert and his club members will give a powerful performance that will teach everybody a bit about self defence.

“And then there is the famous warm-up before the walk, where we will dance our way with the CafeGym instructors and Ocean Audio sound before setting off on the 5km stroll, taking our dogs and babies in prams along for the outing.

“We are asking people to bring anti-drug placards and slogans so we can spread our message to passers-by along the route, which will be controlled by marshalls and traffic officers, with a MedCare24 ambulance on standby just in case. And, of course, there will be ample water tables.

“So come along and join the fun for a worthy cause: the future of our youth.”

Entry fee is R20 for adults and R5 for children, and a bag of pet food for animal entries, for the SPCA.
