One of the first respondents, Mr Mkhwanazi said he saw a cloud of dust coming from the store and people running out of it.

Mkhwanazi said he then rushed to the store and blocked people who were trying to enter the shop.

He then went inside and found that some shoppers had the roof’s wood material on top of them. Mkhwanazi told the ZO he helped a number of people out of the rubble.

Mtubatuba councillor Ntokozo Mthimkhulu said he was worried about the injured patients and hopes they recover soon.

Mthimkhulu said the incident is concerning as it comes just a few weeks after a fire broke out in town ,which destroyed businesses at the Link building.

The councillor said he would check with the municipality whether the renovations at the store, which were ongoing to extend the building to a double storey, had been approved.
