WATCH: Sub-Antarctic fur seal visits Richards Bay

Ezemvelo monitoring seal that beached in Richards Bay

A sub-Antarctic fur seal has graced Richards Bay’s shores with its presence, after beaching in the area this week.

A video sent to the Zululand Observer this (Friday) morning shows a seemingly healthy looking seal perched on the rocks.

It appears to be calm and relaxed, simply scratching itself with its flipper, when approached by the person who shot the video.

The stranding of sub-Antarctic fur seals in Richards Bay appears to be an annual late-winter phenomenon, with sightings usually taking place during late-August and/or September.

Confirming the species of seal, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife said they are monitoring it and contemplating actions, adding that seals beaching at this time of year is typical when they are chasing sardines.

Members of the public are urged to not approach the seal, but instead observe it from a distance and contact the Richards Bay NSRI who are working with Ezemvelo in monitoring it.
