Weather service issues wind warning for KZN

Residents urged to take precautions as strong, damaging winds hit KwaZulu-Natal coastline

Disaster management teams have been placed on high alert as strong, damaging winds are expected to continue today (Thursday) between Port Edward and Richards Bay.

With wind gusts of 70 – 80km/h already being experienced, the forecast is that further north will also be affected, right up to Kosi Bay.

Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) MEC Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi said the winds could lead to localised disruption to beachfront activities, potential damage to homes and temporary structures, challenges for small boats, which may take on water or capsize, and temporary issues in small harbours and ports.

“We strongly advise residents to secure their homes and belongings. Boat owners should avoid going out to sea, and beachgoers are urged to stay away from the water during this period,” he said.

“Our Disaster Management teams are on high alert and will continue to monitor the situation closely,” said Buthelezi.
The disruptive winds come as a result of a cold front passing over KwaZulu-Natal, bringing strong southerly to soutwesterly winds.
