Body of Mtubatuba drown victim recovered

Body of 29-year-old Mtubatuba man found two days after he went missing

Two days after a 29-year-old man went missing in kwaMkhono Dam in Shikishela, Mtubatuba, his body was recovered by police divers.

Reports indicate that Suboniso Mkhwanazi and his friends went for a swim on Saturday at around 4pm when he disappeared.

“The matter was reported to the police and the divers managed to recover the deceased on [Monday] at 8am,” said police spokesperson Captain Justice Hlabisa.

The incident follows another drowning in a neighbouring ward earlier in the month. This took place on the Nyalazi River, which is infamous for such tragedies.

Ward Councillor B Mdluli said the body of a young man was also recovered by police divers. The man reportedly left home and didn’t return. His clothes were later seen in the river.

Mdludli said that, according to local legend, silver coins have to be offered in donation to a mythical serpent residing in the river to release the body of drown victims.
