Young Richards Bay robbery victim succumbs to wounds

Richards Bay youngster Winston Nel passed away in hospital on Sunday

An outdoor activity in the greenbelt in Veldenvlei turned to tragedy last Tuesday when Richards Bay youngster Winston Nel was shot by robbers.

He sadly passed away in hospital on Sunday evening.

The incident occurred within the forest area behind Keiserskroon street where Winston and his friend had gone for a hike and were accosted by armed robbers, with the 24 year old shot in the head during the ordeal.

He was transferred to hospital in Durban, where he later succumbed owing to the severity of his injuries.

His untimely death of Winston has left the community reeling from shock after they had rallied together in prayer for the family.

Winston’s mother, Vicky expressed her appreciation to the residents who responded so quickly to the scene, ensuring Winston was transported to hospital without delay.

She thanked the community for their ‘overwhelming’ outpouring of support and prayers, for which the family is incredibly grateful.

Describing Winston as a ‘people’s person’ with a deep commitment to community safety, he had dedicated most of his adult life to working in armed response, showing a profound care for the well-being of others.

‘Winston’s personality was marked by his warm, approachable nature, and he has always been passionate about protecting those around him.

‘We would like to take this opportunity to emphasise the need for enhanced safety measures in the Veldenvlei area, which has seen incidents of violence before.

‘We hope the relevant authorities will take steps to make it a safer place for everyone.’

Meanwhile, no arrests have been made in the case as Richards Bay SAPS continue their investigations.
